Burning Hot: startup cities, CyanogenMod, ‘squee!’ in the dictionary

Burning Hot srsly

Into Android customisation, the startup scene or just a fan of terms like ‘squee’ and ‘tl;dr’? There’s something for you in this week’s Burning Hot.

In the latest round up of the top tech stories, we look at some of the entrepreneurial hotspots around the globe — specifically, through a recent infographic which points out the top 20 startup cities rated according to factors like startup output and support. It’s based on findings from the massive startup ecosystem report put together by the Startup Genome with aid from C Berkeley, Stanford and Telefónica Digital. Unsurprisingly, Silicon Valley grabbed first place on the index, but there are also a number of emerging business hubs in South America, Israel and across Asia.

Over on Gearburn, Android whisperer Rick Bosch reviewed the latest version of popular open source firmware CyanogenMod, which offers users of Google’s operating system serious levels of customisation and control. From lockscreen widgets to customisable app icons and the exact shade of your notification light, CyanogenMod is all about helping you make your phone or tablet the best fit for you.

Feel like words like ‘twerk’ and ‘vom’ are greatly underappreciated? Well, they’re getting an official stamp of approval from the folks over at Oxford University Press. As Ronan Steyn explains, they’re among the new batch of terms added to Oxford Dictionaries Online, along with a stream of web and tech slang like derp, FOMO and phablet. Srsly.
