Nigerian graphic novel ‘Akaraka’ puts Africa’s artists online
Akaraka: The Call of Destiny is an online graphic novel that shares the fantasy tale of Nigerian demigods, curses and tempting fate. The graphic novel is made available online in efforts to create digital platforms around the youth that will enable brands to reach and engage them.
Akaraka comes from the West African Igbo language which basically means “Destiny is in our hands”. It connotes personal ownership and is also a play on “hand-in-hand” and refers to the “connectedness” of our individual and collective destinies, that everyone needs a helping hand in their journey.
The graphic novel is written by Okoroafor Obiajulu and created by Baba Aminu Mustapha and a group of artists. Akaraka is brought us by Digital Marketing Agency Fans Connect Online — the same guys behind the Afrinolly mobile entertainment app.
Fans Connect Online specializes in building digital audiences via social media or other platforms as well as developing Mobile Applications.
Akaraka tells a story of how courage, friendship, trust and believing in yourself and your friends can get you through the most difficult situations and that no matter what people say or how hard you feel things are, with hard work and dedication you can rewrite your fate and control your destiny.
There are nine chapters freely available online which can all be viewed on the Akaraka website. Though there doesn’t seem to be any ePub, PDF, CBR downloads available.
We are very excited about this and hope to see more African comics come to life online in this way.
