Facebook sees a billion users in one day

More than one-billion people used Facebook on Monday. Yup, that’s right, nearly one-seventh of the world’s population logged on to the big blue social network in a single 24 hour period.

The landmark was announced by Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg in a Facebook post, with a celebratory video following shortly thereafter.

“When we talk about our financials, we use average numbers, but this is different,” Zuckerberg says in the post. “This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it’s just the beginning of connecting the whole world”.

And that’s the message Facebook is putting out with this announcement. While the market worries about ad revenue on desktop and mobile, Facebook seems to be saying, we’re worried about ensuring that friends, family, and lovers stay connected.

“I’m so proud of our community for the progress we’ve made,” Zuckerberg says. “Our community stands for giving every person a voice, for promoting understanding and for including everyone in the opportunities of our modern world”.

“A more open and connected world is a better world,” he adds. “It brings stronger relationships with those you love, a stronger economy with more opportunities, and a stronger society that reflects all of our values”.
