X-Men: Apocalypse, Angry Birds dominating SA cinemas [2016/05/31]
It looks as though South Africans are still loving superhero movies, contrary to genre stagnation complaints on social media.
Over this past weekend, 27 to 29 May 2016, SA movie goers lapped up the recently released X-Men: Apocalypse, along with video game adaptation Angry Bids, and Alice Through the Looking Glass — the movie no one asked for. Regardless of what reviewers are saying about those titles, people still want to see them.
Disney’s current Marvel juggernaut, Captain America: Civil War is still in circulation, but coming in at 8th place. Even the much applauded re-imagining of The Jungle Book is only sitting in the 9th position.
There’s something to be said about movies with big marketing budgets.
Here are the top 10 watched movies in SA this past weekend:
- X-Men: Apocalypse (this includes 3D, Imax, and 4DX)
- Angry Birds (this includes 3D)
- Alice Through the Looking Glass
- The Boss
- Bastille Day
- The Perfect Match
- Bad Neighbours 2
- Captain America: Civil War (this includes 3D, iMax, and 4DX)
- The Jungle Book (this includes 3D, Imax, and 4DX)
- Mother’s Day
Captain America: Civil War currently has the highest to date gross with R31 797 268 in ticket sales.
