The official Ghost in the Shell teaser trailer is here
Anime icon Mamoru Oshii adapted Ghost in the Shell from manga legend Masumane Shirow, turning it into one of the most notable anime films to be released. Now, director Rupert Sanders will attempt to bring this cult classic to live-action.
The 1995 original scored great reviews with a 95% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, wowing audiences in the wake of its release. With a setting and feel arguably similar to Akira, which came out seven years before, Ghost in the Shell still enjoys popularity today. These timeless titles were a visual feast at the time, but also addressed a variety of deep themes.
Hopefully, this live-action release, starring big name actress Scarlett Johansson, will live up to its predecessor. The cast, writers and production team have great source material to work with, but one thing is for sure: there will be a lot of pressure on them to get this right.
