Black Cat and Silver Sable to star in latest Spider-Man movie

If there’s anything that gets me more hyped than women superheroes, its multiple women superheroes starring in the same film.

In a move that looks set to directly compete with DC, Sony have decided its next film in the Spider-Man universe will be centred on Black Cat and Silver Sable.

Black Cat (or Felicia Hardy) is known to fans as the Catwoman to Spider-Man’s Batman. The acrobatic cat burglar and Spider-Man have had a long on-off romance in the comics, despite her mistrust of men that stems from a traumatic past.

This film will be Black Cat’s first proper introduction to the cinematic universe — Felicity Jones played ‘Felicia Hardy’ in Amazing Spider-Man 2, but her superhero alter ego was never mentioned.

Silver Sable, on the other hand, is less well-known as Spider-Man’s sometimes ally, sometimes foe. The character, who hunts war criminals, has never made an appearance on the big screen.

It has not yet been revealed if the women will team up or go head-to-head, mostly because their stories have never met in the comics.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the writer of the upcoming Marvel film Thor: Ragnarok, Chris Yost, is busy writing the script.

The move comes after DC’s announcement in December of girl power feature Gotham City Sirens. The film is set to be handled by Suicide Squad director David Ayer, and Margot Robbie will be reprising her role as Harley Quinn alongside Cat Woman and Poison Ivy.

Sirens producers are eyeing a 2018 release, and if Sony can get their female-led film going quickly, it may be able to release within a few months of the other.

The studio is already producing a Spider-verse spin-off Venom (due October 2018) that focuses on the popular antihero, and Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released 7 July.

Sony seem to be milking its rights to the Spider-verse for as much as its worth, and if it means a “superhero women team up to save the world” feature then, honestly, who are we to complain?
