South Africa’s box office: Atomic Blonde can’t take out Hitman
South Africans have proven fickle this week as Atomic Blonde failed to open in the top spot despite homegirl Charlize Theron taking the lead. Instead, the nation went out in support of Samuel L Jackson and Ryan Reynolds in The Hitman’s Bodyguard, which held on to first place for the second week in a row.
But how did the other films fare this weekend? (25 – 27 August)
Son of Bigfoot has proven resilient for an animation not produced by a major studio. The film, created by Belgian nWave Pictures, is still in third place in its third week on the chart — refusing to budge for the likes of former chart topper Girls Trip.
The female-led comedy has been smashing it in the US — bringing in US$108-million from a US$19-million budget. It’s also been doing well locally, but this weekend dropped two spots to fourth after losing the third place battle with Son of Bigfoot.
Also dropping two this week was Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, now in sixth. The action film was not in as high demand as horror Annabelle: Creation, which has clung to the fifth place it opened in last week.
Annabelle has raked in a whopping US$216-million worldwide (on US$15-million), with most of that coming from foreign markets. Notably, the film pulled in US$12-million from South Korea alone.
Back in South Africa, Despicable Me 3 is still the highest life-to-date grosser on the top ten charts having sold just under R45-million in tickets. That number is not set to rise much more — thanks, in part, to the arrival of Son of Bigfoot — but the minions, in seventh, have a small bit of life left in them.
The same cannot be said for Spider-Man: Homecoming (review): it’s currently teetering in tenth spot behind Captain Underpants. The Marvel film has spent eight weeks on the chart since debuting in first last month, and has made a total of US$737-million worldwide.
