SA’s box office: There’s no Justice Fatigue
It’s Justice League‘s last week at the top of South Africa’s box office (Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out this Friday) and what a time it’s been. The superhero film held onto number one for an impressive four weeks, and it needs the win after after pulling in the lowest worldwide gross of the DCEU franchise.
But how did the other films fare this weekend? (8 – 10 December)
Bad Moms Christmas couldn’t sustain its opening week momentum and crashed like a hungover wine mom on Boxing Day. The film dropped two spots down to fourth, despite not competing with any chart newbies.

The film’s fall made way for Daddy’s Home 2 and Coco to rise back to the respective second and third spots they debuted in three weeks ago. The former is currently the tenth highest-grossing Christmas film since 1980 (though that isn’t adjusted for inflation).
Holding on to fifth and sixth spots are Paddington 2 and Murder on the Orient Express. Neither have been global box office smashes, though Paddington does currently have a neat 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 48 reviews.
Halle Berry thriller Kidnap opened in seventh place this weekend, despite a very low-key marketing campaign. The film — about a mother who chases after her son when he’s kidnapped — panned critically, though it has already made more than its US$21-million production budget.
Local action comedy Vuil Wasgoed opened in a standard eighth spot
Local action comedy Vuil Wasgoed (Dirty Laundry) opened in a standard South African eighth spot. Directed by Morné du Toit, Vuil Wasgoed tells of two young men who party in their laundromat clients’ clothes — until one night they find a finger in one of the pockets.
Finally, Thor: Ragnarok has dropped two spots to ninth — and it will be interesting to see if it can hold on one more week for the bragging rights of having clung on to the charts for eight consecutive weekends. The Marvel film currently has the highest life-to-date gross with over R28.6-million.
