The Incredibles 2 kicks Jurassic World from SA Box Office top spot
Superhero movies are all the rage in 2018, but the flick topping this week’s SA box office doesn’t have any Chris Pratt, Ryan Reynolds or Avengers stars in it.
Instead, they’re all adorable pixels from Pixar, voiced by the likes of Holly Hunter and Craig T. Nelson.
In its debut week, The Incredibles 2 has wrestled top spot away from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, who itself dislodged third place Deadpool 2 two weeks back.
Critics’ reception of the Pixar sequel some 14 years in the making is positive too, with a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes at present (still 3% shy from the first instalment).
However, Pixar’s sequel seemingly does deserve to be there. It made some US$180-million in its first weekend — the highest figure for an animated flick ever. The previous record holder was 2016’s Finding Dory, which made some US$45-million less.
Locally, fifth-placed Avengers: Infinity War is still the chart’s biggest grosser, making R71.3-million since its debut some two months ago.
In fourth, Breaking In holds steady, while new entry Hereditary debuts in sixth. Overboard outranks Sherlock Gnomes this week, which itself has tumbled from its lofty fourth place position last week.
Finally, Tyler Perry’s Acrimony is on its way out in ninth, while biblical drama Samson, which made its circuit debut last week, makes its chart debut in tenth.
