‘How to Train Your Dragon’ is SA’s biggest movie this week
How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was Southern Africa’s biggest movie this past weekend, according to data from Ster Kinekor.
The new release from Dreamworks, voiced by Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera, jumped straight to the top of the chart, relegating The Upside to second place.
In third spot, DC’s Aquaman remains Southern Africa’s biggest grosser still on the chart, raking in R51.6-million since its debut nearly two months ago.
Oscar winner Rami Malek’s Bohemian Rhapsody places fourth this week, while the M. Night Shyamalan-directed Glass is fifth.
Notably, the next three movies are all South African-made.
Matwetwe, produced by DJ Black Coffee and directed by Kagiso Lediga, is placed sixth. The movie tells the story freshly graduated friends who have a raucous New Years Eve in the middle of Atteridgeville.
In seventh, Dominee Tienie stars Deon Lotz as a pastor who has lost his way and his community, and the journey he undertakes to recover both.
And rounding out South Africa’s entrants, 3 Days To Go is a drama-comedy about life, death and a dysfunctional family.
Possession of Hannah Grace and Mary Poppins Returns rounds up the weekend chart.
