‘Avengers: Endgame’ spoiler-free review: Marvel cleaned up good

Undoubtedly, Avengers: Endgame was (and still is) one of the most anticipated movies in recent cinematic history.

Even I, who has seen the movie already, am itching to watch it again. Not because it had me on the edge of my seat for three hours (it didn’t) or because it was packed with action and excitement from the moment it began (it wasn’t), but because it was so wholesomely deep.

A darkness covers the entire plot, yes. It’s often morbid, cold and dreary, yes. But the movie remains true to Marvel style while introducing a well executed take on grief and loss. An achievement I believe is impressive for such a well-established franchise.

It might be hard to imagine life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after the events of Infinity War, but rest assured, humour and action are still present in Endgame.

These tropes are, however, scattered both artfully and awkwardly around the fact that Thanos’ victory has left enormous holes in the hearts of the survivors.

Though some of the funny moments and digressions from grace are cliche, the movie is far from predictable. In fact, Avengers: Endgame is littered with satisfying, heart-warming and nail-biting twists that keep you emotionally charged throughout the film.

On a technical level, Endgame takes the Avengers franchise full circle. Storylines are both tied up and set up for future adventures where they need to be.

Though I can’t elaborate, I do believe that character archs followed their natural trajection. The beginning of the movie features some choppy scenes, but the plot was in no way forced.

It’s hard not to spoil this great ending, which pays homage to the lives of the Avengers since their beginnings in the MCU, without saying that watching this movie will upset you as much as it will fill you with a sense of pride.

You’ll be going “Oh no, don’t do that” and “Yaaas” more than once when watching this movie.

Endgame is no Infinity War, however, and you might find some action sequences a bit anticlimactic. Fortunately, this is made up for towards the final hour of the movie, where Marvel shows off every bit of its storytelling arsenal.

Though I am planning to watch it a few more times, I would not go as far to say I loved Avengers: Endgame. The movie was indeed macabre and its initial pacing reflected this, but the conclusion was clean.

In the end, I was left happy, but with a heavy heart.
