Google Photos ‘bug’ lets iPhone users upload original quality photos for free

A report by Android Police on Sunday revealed that iPhone users have been able to upload original quality images to Google Photos for free.

This means that original, uncompressed HEIC format iOS photos can be stored on the platform with no cost to a user’s 15GB of free storage space.

“We are aware of this bug and are working to fix it,” a Google spokesperson reportedly told the publication.

The “bug” was first spotted by a Reddit user, who explained that iPhone’s HEIC format photos are able to get around the platform’s quota because they are actually smaller than the compressed JPG files Google stores on Photos.

Google has not indicated when the bug will be fixed. Back in September, however, the company added Memories to Google Photos, a feature that displays older pictures in a Stories-like format on the platform.
