Twitter will be removing inactive accounts this December in an effort to “clean up” the platform and free unused Twitter handles.

“As part of our commitment to serve the public conversation, we’re working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate, credible information people can trust across Twitter,” the company told The Verge in a statement on Tuesday.

Accounts that have been dormant for at least six months will face deactivation and the loss of their usernames, meaning that new handles will be available to Twitter-regulars.

Users who don’t want to lose their accounts, however, can simply log-in to Twitter before 11 December 2019 to keep their profiles active.

The move comes after Twitter recently launched a number of new features also aimed at serving public conversation, including the ability to both follow and hide replies on tweets.
