This is the most retweeted tweet of 2013
It’s been another year of hashtags and crazy highs for Twitter, with the social media site fuelling discussion on everything from disasters to celebrity deaths and major world news. Last year, the most retweeted post belonged to none other than the president of the United States, and included a shot of him embracing his wife and the simple text “Four more years” after being re-elected.
This year’s most retweeted post was less celebratory, but still thankful — it belonged to Lea Michele, and was her first public acknowledgement of the death of her boyfriend and Glee co star Cory Monteith. To date, it has received almost half a million retweets from 133 countries around the world.
Thank you all for helping me through this time with your enormous love & support. Cory will forever be in my heart. pic.twitter.com/XVlZnh9vOc

There were other significant posts in 2013 too — as Twitter notes in its annual round up of the year in tweets. From a member of One Direction’s birthday to the passing of Paul Walker, it’s been a mixed array of tweets that have captured the world’s attention. Twitter has helpfully rounded up some of the biggest global trending topics and discussions in a month-by-month breakdown to give you an overview of what’s been happening across the world. It’s also broken the chatter down into distinct categories, like news, sports and entertainment.
