Live video streaming for everyone as Periscope finally comes to Android

It has taken two months for Periscope to arrive on Android but it is finally here. The Twitter-owned live video streaming app has had an incredible run with iOS users, trying to dethrone Meerkat of its title as king of live video streaming.

Meerkat came out of beta a few weeks ago and now its nemesis has followed it to the Android operating system.

“When we started Periscope, we wanted to build the closest thing to teleportation – by providing users with the best way to start or watch a live video broadcast. As a small startup, our initial launch was limited to just iOS, but we’ve been working really hard to craft an experience that feels special on Android, yet still unmistakably Periscope,” the company said in a press release.

Periscope comes to Android with all the features that iOS users have come to enjoy over the past two months. These include a public or private broadcast, choosing to allow comments from just those you follow, and interacting with a broadcaster by chatting or sending hearts.

In addition to keeping its current features, unlike Meerkat, Periscope for Android comes with some unique features. Android users have granular control over additional push notification settings, such as “First Time Broadcast notifications” (when somebody you follow on Twitter broadcasts on Periscope for the first time) and “Share notifications” (when somebody you follow on Periscope shares somebody else’s broadcast).

Periscope on Android comes with another sleek feature called Resume notification which allows Android users to resume watching where they left off in case their broadcast got interrupted by a phone call or message.

Replays can also be saved without requiring the broadcaster to upload a file. Periscope points out that this should save broadcasters lots of time and preserve mobile data allowance.

The app is available for devices running Android Kitkat and higher on the Google Play store.
