Can this website make a dent in South Africa’s rampant corruption rates?
There’s no doubt that corruption is a massive problem in South Africa. According to the 2014 Transparency International Corruption Index, the country ranks 67th below the likes of Dominica, Lithuania, and Latvia. At times it can seem like an insurmountable problem, but a new platform is trying to change that.
The platform, called Expose It, is the brainchild on the Justice Alliance of South Africa (JASA), an NGO composed of lawyers working to advance justice in South Africa.
Expose It is a website and USSD phone app aimed at fighting corruption on every level within public service organisations including; government departments, political parties and parastatals.

“As a socially driven movement, Expose It relies on citizen reports: the more incidents are reported, the more hotspots are exposed for our legal team know exactly where to take action,” the NGO says in a press release sent to Memeburn.
According to JASA, both the site and USSD app allow people to report corruption safely and anonymously — from bribery, back-handed deals and bullying to abuse of power.
“Unlike many other corruption organisations, Expose It’s legal team of experts is dedicated to taking legal action and act on hotspots exposed by pubic reports on our platform.” Expose It says. “Through JASA, we have the support of the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, the National Prosecuting Authority and Public Protector to help ensure cases are prosecuted whenever there is appropriate evidence”.
