Last week in trailers: Heath Ledger, Tupac and Anne of Green Gables
If last week was all about the big-name blockbusters, this week is all about intimacy and gentle nostalgia. From documentaries and biopics of beloved pop culture icons, to adaptations of childhood classics, this week is in it to make you cry one single tear.
So prep those heartstrings for some plucking, because you’re about to feel some things.
I Am Heath Ledger
Heath Ledger was rarely seen without a camera in hand, and Spike’s new documentary takes you into the icon’s personal world as he saw it.
In this melancholy trailer, actor Ben Mendelsohn, director Ang Lee, Ledger’s sister Kate and others all talk about the man Ledger was: arresting, talented and always living on the edge.
I Am Heath Ledger is part of Spike’s “I Am” series which provides “an inside look at the lives of extraordinary individuals as told by their inner-circles.”
The film will premiere at Tribeca Film Festival on 23 April, will be in select theatres 3 May, and will make its TV premiere on Spike 17 May.
Marvel’s The Defenders
The first footage of Marvel’s The Defenders has been released, and while the teaser may not be much, it is stocked with clues and a virtual treasure hunt.
So if you’re someone who laments how much plot trailers give away — marvel at this wondrous lack of information.
The Defenders will be avaliable on Netflix 18 August.
Dimension 404
On paper, Hulu’s latest sci-fi anthology may look a lot like Black Mirror. Every episode is a new story, and every episode imagines a future in which our technology is pushed to its extreme.
But Dimension 404 is a sitcom, and it takes itself decidedly less seriously than Black Mirror.
Episodes star the likes of Lea Michele (Glee), Joel McHale (Community), Patton Oswalt (The King of Queens), Sarah Hyland (Modern Family), Megan Mullally (Will and Grace) and Constance Wu (Fresh off the Boat.)
The first three episodes were released on Hulu on 4 April, and the series is currently being rolled out globally.
Master of None
At the end of Master of None’s first season (spoilers), Dev Shah left Rachel and set off to Italy to find himself and make some pasta.
The latest trailer for season two shows Dev enjoying his romantic time in Italy, with cheese and pasta and Europeans abound — until he has to face life back in New York.
“After traveling abroad, Dev (Aziz Ansari) returns to New York to take on challenges in his personal and family life, a new career opportunity, and a complex, developing relationship with someone very meaningful to him,” reads the description.
Master of None’s second season will be on Netflix 12 May.
Anne
Anne is Netflix’s upcoming series based on the Anne of Green Gables books.
“Anne is a coming-of-age story about an outsider who, against all odds and many challenges, fights for love and acceptance and her place in the world,” reads the description. “Anne’s adventures will reflect timeless and topical issues including themes of identity, feminism, bullying and prejudice.”
Nothing like getting a lesson on societal issues from a piece of work that’s been around for more than 100 years. If we don’t know Anne by now…
You can watch Anne on Netflix on 12 May.
Ingrid Goes West
You wouldn’t be alone if the first part of this trailer reminded you of Black Mirror’s Nosedive. And you wouldn’t be wrong, either.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ingrid Goes West is a film about a mentally unstable Ingrid (Aubrey Plaza) who becomes obsessed with perfect social media influencer Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen). But when Ingrid drops everything to become friends with her in real life, her behaviour takes a dangerous turn.
And if Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen starring in a dark comedy together doesn’t entice you, then there’s not much more I can say.
Ingrid Goes West is out in theatres 4 August.
Girlboss
Sophia Amoruso of Nasty Gal fame may have filed for bankruptcy last year, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve her own Netflix success series, right?
“Girlboss is inspired by the New York Times best-selling book #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso,” the description reads. “The series centers on Sophia, who began selling vintage clothes on eBay and, by the age of 28, had built the multi-million dollar fashion empire, Nasty Gal.”
Britt Robertson shines in this trailer about the fashionista’s life, as she takes on the hardships of love, life and online auctions.
Girlboss streams on Netflix 21 April.
All Eyez On Me
If you’re still melancholy about the Heath Ledger documentary, now’s probably not the best time to watch this trailer for the Tupac Shakur biopic.
“All Eyez On Me chronicles the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur, including his rise to superstardom as a hip hop artist, actor, poet and activist, as well as his imprisonment and prolific, controversial time at Death Row Records,” reads the description. “Against insurmountable odds, Shakur rose to become a cultural icon whose career and persona both continue to grow long after his passing.”
The film is in theatres 16 June.
