5 Netflix exclusives coming to South Africa in December
It’s officially the festive season, and you know what that means: avoiding family members at absolutely all costs. So why not do so with some Netflix exclusives heading to South Africa this sunny December?
Here’s what’s hitting the platform this month.
1 December: Dark
If you’re looking for something to fill the gap in your heart while Stranger Things is on hiatus, why not try German series Dark?
Netflix describes the 10-episode-long show as a “family saga with a supernatural twist”. It tells of a small German town reeling from the disappearance of two young children, and the trailer leans heavily on the prospect of time travel.
Netflix South Africa offers second seasons of The Crown and Cable Girls this December
Also out on the first is the documentary Voyeur, about a man who bought a motel just so he could spy on his guests, and the second season of Easy, the anthology series starring the likes of Aubrey Plaza, Orlando Bloom, Dave Franco, Hannibal Buress, Emily Ratajkowski, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
8 December: The Crown
Next year is promising not only a royal baby but also a royal wedding, so tap into the monarchical spirit with the second season of The Crown and try not to think too hard of the atrocities of British imperialism.
In season two, Claire Foy plays Queen Elizabeth as she struggles to navigate the monarchy’s role in post-war Britain.
The season will be most of the cast’s swansong, as the third will introduce older actors into the roles. Olivia Colman (Broadchurch) will be taking on the role of the queen.
15 December: Wormwood
From the teaser, Wormwood looks like a trippy, atmospheric telling of the true story of the “CIA, LSD experiments, mind control, and the death of a family man”.
The six-episode docudrama combines filmmaker Errol Morris’ (The Thin Blue Line) interview style with the dramatic flourish of Peter Sarsgaard (Jackie), “bringing the viewer face-to-face with some of the United States’ darkest secrets”, Netflix says.
Also out on the 15th is the second season of Ultimate Beastmaster, the 10-episode event series that sees competitors from six countries compete in “one of the most physically demanding obstacle courses ever devised”.
22 December: Bright
The much-hyped sci-fi buddy cop film Bright will finally be out on the 22nd.
Starring Will Smith, Bright follows a human and an orc cop who embark on a routine patrol that unexpectedly changes their world. The duo battle their own prejudices while also facing a barrage of otherworldly enemies.
The film is directed by David Ayer of Suicide Squad notoriety.
Not keen on Bright? New episodes of spinoff series Fuller House will also be available on the 22nd.
25 December: Cable Girls
Spanish melodrama Cable Girls tells of a telecommunications company in 1928 Madrid, and the four women who move their lives to the city to work there.
“Jealousy, envy and betrayal will get mixed up with the hunger for success, friendship and love,” the synopsis reads.
The first season found critical acclaim for its lighthearted fun and feminist themes. The second season promises more drama, intrigue, and ride-or-die female friendships.
Also out on Christmas Day, Travelers‘ second season returns viewers to the world of futuristic humans who came back in time to save our species.
