Fergie gets the internet talking after spicy US anthem performance

Singing the US national anthem at a sporting event is a great honour. At this weekend’s NBA All Star game, said honour was bestowed on Fergie.

Yep, that’s right. Fergie of Black Eyed Peas and “M.I.L.F. $” fame.

As far as the anthem goes, she didn’t forget any lyrics, nor did she fluff any lines. But she did provide the United States with one of the most divisive anthem performances ever.

The internet however has already forged ahead with the commentary. And Americans almost immediately forgot all about the basketball match set to take place.

“Thanks Fergie — now I know what the National Anthem would sound like if Carol from accounting sang it after five mango daiquiris,” wrote comedian Chris Franjola.

The comments didn’t get any kinder either.

However, not everyone’s ears were bleeding after the performance, and some looked to provide comfort to the artist.

The pile on about Fergie’s National Anthem is a bit much. It is a very difficult song to do. I tried it and will never do it again. Most nervous I’ve been in my life at that Diamondbacks game. Let’s cut her a little slack .. it’s fun to bash not so much fun to bashed about.😎👍

That’s nice Twitter.

And to be fair, America has seen worse. R. Kelly’s smooth-as-gravel rendition in 2005, Michael Bolton’s hand-written crib notes peek in 2003, and this completely deliberately bad gem by Rosanne Barr all now live in infamy on YouTube.

Whether it deserves it or not, it’s likely that Fergie’s rendition with join them thanks to the internet.
