Angry Birds, Harry Potter: 10 interesting fan fiction sites
The worst moments of a good book, movie or television series are when those final words play out and there is nothing more. The agonising pain you feel when a story you’ve dedicated seven years of your life to ends and there are still so many unanswered questions. When a network cancels a show without so much as a final all-inclusive episode, what do you do?
Enter the world of fan fiction, where no matter what the networks or the author say, the story never ends.
I have written about fictional characters on Twitter and the new world of social fan fiction. The tweets are good but that’s just one character, what you need is for the story to go on.
I have trawled the web for some interesting (and some disturbing) fan fiction sites to help you get through the lonely moments when you just want one more adventure onboard the USS Enterprise, to venture through the wardrobe into Narnia, or a final battle behind the black gates of Mount Doom.
FanFiction.Net
This site is arguably a leader in the world of fan fiction, with nearly 2.2-million users and stories in more than 30 languages. Unlike most fan fiction sites, it is not dedicated to one genre or title, it’s a culmination of everything. You can add and read various categories of fiction to your heart’s content. It also has a pretty cool mobile version so the fun doesn’t end when you are away from your PC.
I got a little carried away here reading some prequels to the short-lived American sci-fi show, FireFly. My favourite, Starlight, takes place just before the Unification wars.
Harry Potter FanFiction.com
This list would be incomplete and the internet would have done us all a great disservice if Harry Potter fan fiction wasn’t flying about the web. There are quite a few of these but I happen to like this one because the writers are thorough. We’re talking whole books modeled around Harry’s wizarding universe.
The most interesting one I read was Out of Time which followed the time-jumping young Lily Potter, Harry’s daughter. The writing is not half bad and there is some believable insight there.
The site has 77 101 members with 73 673 stories.
Trek FanFiction
Yes everyone wants one more adventure with Captain James T Kirk. The cool thing about this site is its categories for different shows. There is a section for the original series, Deep Space Nine, Voyager as well as Next Generation.
Being a fan of the original series, I took a gander there and got caught in a Vulcan mirror universe with Spock deep in conversation with a parallel Kirk.
The only problem with this site is that there are big time gaps between updates but it’s still good reading fun.
Lord of the Rings FanFiction
Yes more of the world of Middle Earth! The sites boasts a membership of 4 296 with 4 197 stories. That’s a fair amount of Tolkien! Here, like the Harry Potter universe, the fans are dedicated and these are not just short stories but book equivalents.
Unfortunately nothing on this site really grabbed me. As a fan of Lord of the Rings I felt that some real originality was lacking here. I did, however, enjoy reading West of the Moon, East of the Sun, which taps into Frodo’s life in the West for those who are familiar with Light from the West.
It’s a cool site to while away the time.
Twilighted
Apparently if I didn’t include this on my list I would be offending a great number of online users. So here we go. This site is really into Edward and Bella and the users are willing to explore all possible facets of the Twilight universe.
I read one of the stories, which takes place pre-the Twilight series featuring Carlisle, the patriarch of the Twilight universe, called Lost and Found. The story was, well, a Twilight story. But the harsh white writing on black screen was too much my for eyes so I gave up. But I’m sure fans of the series will love it.
Asianfanfics.com
Dedicated to fan fiction just from Asia, this site claims to be the “most feature-rich Asian fan fiction site on the web”. The site is pretty dense with content from its 8 4576 enthusiastic users.
To access the full site you have to log in as a member but the stories are easily accessible. I read a chapter of the The Scarecrow’s Necklace, which was fairly interesting though I lacked context as to which story it was based on, which is a low point for this site I think.
Fan Fiction Wikia
A collaborative site for true fandom, with 7 811 articles posted on the site, fans of Harry Potter, Star Wars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have truly been busy.
I laboriously crawled down to S and found Star Wars (yes, I can be a fan of Wars and Trek!). Star Wars: The Animated Legacy based on George Lucas’s prequel as well the original film trilogies. This fan fiction series deals with an ongoing war between two groups: The Galactic Republic and the rebellious Separatists.
The site also works as a great resource for other fan fiction sites. Careful you don’t get carried away here.
Narnia Fan Fiction Revolution
Narnia fan fiction revolution has declared itself the “premier site” dedicated to providing fans with stories around the Narnia universe. The site has also proudly declared its openness to all religions: “We are a community open to all religious and non-religious fans of the Chronicles”.
There are a few interesting stories and fans will love them, but I’m afraid nothing amazing caught my eye.
Angry Birds Fan Fiction
Before you ask, you are in fact reading right, Angry Birds. I went to the site a little concerned. I mean they are exploding birds, what are they going to talk about? The site is inspired by the game and follows, well, the birds and the pigs.
The stories are quite interesting, the birds are given names like The Black Basher, Little Blue, Firestorm and Yellow Rocket. The stories give back stories to the game and some even put the reader inside the head of a bird before it explodes.
My favourite is For Hate’s Sake, which talks about the brutal cost of the war between the birds and the pigs.
Bon Jovi Fan Fiction Directory
You thought Angry Birds was weird. Welcome to the real world people. I like Bon Jovi as much as the next girl but a whole site dedicated to what could have been and what should be?
The site works as a directory for all Bon Jovi fans to submit their work from other sites. The stories mostly centre around Jon, the lead singer of the band, but every now and again, Ritchie, David and Tico make an appearance. I wonder what the band thinks of this?
I found this Jon one particularly interesting.
