Want something you’ve created to go viral online? If you plan on starring on the video, it’s not going to be easy. Not everybody has the time to get hit by a buck while out on a bike ride, or rescue a calf from an irrigation canal, or fall painfully off a skateboard.
There is, however, another way. Be warned, though, it involves cats. It’s an almost universally accepted truth that the internet loves cats. Ceiling Cat, Basement Cat, Monorail Cat, Nyan Cat, we love them all. It’s pretty much a given, therefore, that your awesome cat is a hell of a lot more likely to go viral than you ever are.
Even top Canadian advertising agency John St. is getting in on the act. The agency released a video detailing its plans to become the world’s first “catvertising” agency.
“We’re seeing a shift in consumer habits, everything is moving towards cat videos and the agencies that don’t realise that will get left behind,” says creative director Stepehen Jurisic.
“We’ve seen phenomenal growth in this category, we’re taking that learning an applying it to our business model,” adds John St. President Arthur Fleishman.
The video goes on to show the incredible energy such an agency would have. It also demonstrates precisely how cooperative cats can be once you’ve storyboarded a video for them. The rationale is incredibly persuasive. After all, says strategic planner John Last, “by 2015 cat videos are going to represent 90% of the content on the world wide web,” sniffing as his allergies get the better of him.
The strategy seems to be paying dividends for John St. In the couple of weeks the video’s been live it has garnered over one-million views.
As the tagline for the video says, if you’re going to ask yourself anything today, ask “what can cat videos do for your business?”
