Instagram might not be coming, natively, to BlackBerry 10 after all
So if you’ve got a BlackBerry 10, or are waiting for one to arrive, chances are you were sold on the promise that all the important apps would be there. For most people, that included Instagram, but there’s a chance that the photo-filter and sharing app might not actually launch on BlackBerry’s new platform.
AllThingsD is reporting that sources close to Instagram have said that there won’t be a native version of the app on the platform in the near future. “There will be no [native] Instagram for BB10 for now,” said one. “Frankly, I’m not sure there will ever be.”
Of course that doesn’t mean it will be impossible to experience Instagram on BlackBerry 10. The company is apparently working on an Android port of the app. But these apps don’t offer the experience you get on BlackBerry 10’s Cascades SDK. They also tend to perform sluggishly and generally appear divorced from the rest of the system.
BlackBerry was fairly neutral in its response to the reports: “We have a strong partnership and are actively engaged around Instagram support for BB10,” said Martyn Mallick, BlackBerry’s VP Global Alliances, “but we do not have an availability date at this point.”
“We can’t comment on ongoing negotiations with app partners. BlackBerry is committed to working with developers to continue to bring top titles to BlackBerry 10 customers including Amazon Kindle, Songza, WhatsApp, PicStory, and Angry Birds,” the company added in a statement supplied to Memeburn.
These reports fly in the face of the assertion made by renowned BlackBerry expert Kevin Michaluk of Crackberry late last year. He’d better hope the sources close to Instagram are wrong, otherwise he’ll be buying someone a car.
