Bravias ‘not being recalled’ says Sony

Sony was quick to negate reports that its popular line of Bravia LCD TVs was being recalled due to safety issues. Over 1.6-million Bravia’s were thought to be affected. Instead of owning up to any technical error, however, Sony has decided on a free TV inspection program on selected models.

When contacted, Bravia stressed that there was most definitely no recall. UK PR manager for Sony, David Edwards said, “The issue came to our attention through reports in Japan that a limited number of products might contain a component affected by a quality issue, which in a rare number of cases might over-heat and ignite inside the television and possibly result in the melting of the upper casing of the television.”

“To date, there have been no reports of any damage to other property or physical injuries.

“However, as part of our ongoing commitment to customer service and satisfaction, and as a precaution, Sony is voluntarily initiating a programme to perform a free inspection and, if necessary, a free repair to reassure you that these products meet your expectations of our high standards for quality and safety.”

Only 11 incidents were reported, with most of the sets melting and emitting smoke due to broken parts. The 11 cases all took place in Japan, where the story of a mass product recall first originated. The models which could have possibly have been affected have been on sale since 2007.

TVs possibly at fault include the KDL-40D3400, 40D3500, 40D3550, 40D3660, 40V3000, 40W3000, 40X3000 and the 40X3500. Anyone with these TVs should either contact Sony or visit its official support page in order to book their unit in for an “inspection”.
