Ultra-tiny Galaxy Pocket debuts
Hands too small for a Galaxy Nexus? Samsung has just announced the Galaxy Pocket, a mini-smartphone with a 2.8-inch display.
Looking for a mobile phone with a beefy set of specs? The Galaxy Pocket won’t be your best bet then as it has a 823Mhz CPU, 3GB on-board memory (expandable to 32GB via microSD) and Gingerbread for its OS. We doubt that the Galaxy Pocket will host Ice Cream Sandwich later down the line.
Judging by the specs, the Galaxy Pocket will most likely be a “social smartphone”. Samsung lists value-added features such as the Whatsapp-like ChatON service as a highlight of the new device. The included wireless and quad-band connectivity should keep social media pundits happy.
While the video playback promises support for H.264 codecs (full-HD), we wouldn’t watch Tron: Legacy on this 2.8-inch device. Hell, it won’t even fit given the tiny 3GB on-board memory.
Samsung plans to launch the phone “later this year” in the UK, with the rest of the world pencilled in for an unknown date. The specs are underwhelming, so let’s hope this budget phone is priced for the market it’s aimed at.
