Lumia 800 and 710 ‘Jailbroken’

It was only a matter of time. Nokia’s Lumia 800 and 710 Windows Phones have been successfully rooted, or jailbroken and it’s called the Interop-Unlock.

If you didn’t care before, you’ll care now. The benefits include running unsigned apps, pirated software (if you so desire) and possible even loading a version of Android onto the Lumia. Now we’re talking.

Loading a custom Android ROM onto the Lumia is rather tricky and very “Alpha” in its current state, but more possible than ever before.

Lumia’s with the stock-standard Qualcomm bootloaders are vulnerable to a security hack which delivers unbridled access to the phones memory. Here’s how it works:

First up, check if your Lumia is compatible. Go to “Settings -> About -> more info” and check if the “Hardware revision number” ends with 2.4. If it does, the phone won’t unlock.

  • Shut down the Lumia, and connect it to a computer via USB
  • Press the power button and hold the both volume keys at the same time
  • Boom, done. The computer detects the Lumia as a  Qualcomm storage device
  • Do NOT format the drive if Windows prompts you. No.
  • If the device flashes with “Nokia DLOAD” then you can’t unlock it.

Now, load unsigned apps or custom ROM’s onto the phone. There’s a truck-load of other technical details, all we’ve done is sum up the unlock process as simply as possible. As always, the phone can be bricked, so any Lumia unlock is purely at the risk of the user. Consult this link for all answers surrounding the Lumia Interop-unlock
