Meet the Google Nexus Q social streaming media player

Google is making another play for the home entertainment market with the newly announced Google Nexus Q, a “social streaming media player.”

As you would expect, the Nexus Q is Android powered — it runs the same chipset as the Google Nexus — and will stream music and video from the Google Play store or YouTube — no Netflix, Hulu and so on.

It allows your friends to create social playlists and is controlled from your Android devices — multiple Qs can be controlled from a given Android device. It can also serve a a 25-watt amplifier for plugging in your own speakers or Google’s newly announced US$399.99 Triad speakers.

The Q packs dual-Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Ethernet, Bluetooth, NFC and has a capacitive touch sensor for muting the audio.

The Nexus Q is shipping in July and will only be available in the US for now.
