Telkom begins 40Mbps broadband roll out and the preorders start today
South Africans. Want to get in on the Telkom 40Mbps action? Hit up this link and get busy. From today, users can visit the site we linked to and “register interest” for the product. Users will then be contacted if and when the 40-meg line is available. We couldn’t find the rumoured 40Mbps option in the drop-down window. Maybe Telkom got cold feet and pulled out of the deal? We’ll update you as the story unravels.
It’s all about trailing new tech for SA-based parastatal, Telkom. VDSL2, ADSL2+ and gleaming fibre lines are being tested in select areas and for a few lucky subscribers who qualify for this digital speed-injection. Telkom’s looking at a date of 2015 to “normalise” internet and make 2Mbps lines standard. Also by 2015, it’s hoping that 40Mpbs will be stable and standard in terms of fastest possible line speeds. There’s two things we do know though:
One, the line is not available for residential or commercial use. Two, this is a test at best, any household that receives the fabled 40Mbps line is the luckiest home in South Africa. For users who qualify, Telkom will contact them and arrange installation. So, there’s no date, no price and no mention of availability. Sounds about right for a Telkom product. Regardless, try your luck and see what happens.
