ZTE unveils its U887, a new 5-inch entry-level phablet

ZTE is the latest manufacturer to enter the 5-inch phablet market with the U887. ZTE’s newest phablet offering is designed to appeal to the lower-end user, as the company is set to release higher specced devices sometime down the line. The U887 seems aimed at testing the waters, before the company begins releasing a full-range phablet lineup.

The ZTE U887 sports some modest specs, but it should be able to handle the needs of most smartphone users. Its 5-inch screen displays 800 x 480 resolution quality, not enough to compete against the HTC J Butterfly, Oppo Find 5 or soon to be released Huawei Ascend D2, but it should offer users enough the requisite crispness to remain satisfied.

The U887 is powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2Ghz which is supported by 512MB RAM and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It’s also fitted with a 5MP rear and surprisingly high 3MP front facing cameras.

The ZTE U887 is definitely not going to blow potential users away with its specs, but that’s not really its purpose. The U887 is designed to provide a basic user experience with little to no frustration at a relatively low-cost.

Which brings us to the U887’s defining aspect, its price point. ZTE is yet to officially assign one, it will therefore go a long way in determining its market appeal, if the right price point is hit.

If users are not impressed by the U887, ZTE’s high-end Nubia 5, which is scheduled for unveiling on 21 December (Just in time for the Apocalypse). The Nubia 5 is rumoured to pack a 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core processor and 12MP camera. We’ll be sure to provide a detailed update of it, when it launches.
