The Medias W N-05E proves that two screens are better than one
We’ve said before. If any nation deserves the acronym “crazy”, it’s the Japanese. “Hey, let’s make a smartphone with two screens that fold together” some crazy tech guy said in a crazy Japanese laboratory somewhere. And the result is the Medias W N-05E, a smartphone with two qHD 4.3-inch (540 x 960) screens that combined will create an almost 5.6-inch square display.
The two screens can operate independently or as one, allowing a user to, for instance, browse webpages on the one while playing games on the other. According to The Verge the 1.5GHz dual-core processor held its own during testing in two-screen mode, although there was occasional lag when switching between display configurations. The one screen can also become a full-sized QWERTY keyboard that will make typing easier while using the second one for web surfing, email or while viewing your photo gallery.
The phone runs on Android 4.1 and measures 136mm × 64mm × 12.2mm. That’s not the most dazzling of dimensions, especially the 12.2mm, but then again we are talking about basically combining two phones in one here. The only troubling area could be the battery, a 2100mAh specimen that could have a short life while utilizing so many pixels all at once. It will also have 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel shooter, 16GB of built-in storage and a microSDHC slot.
This is not the first time a dual screen phone has shown itself, with Kyocera and Sony both having delved into the folding screen area, and not succeeded to well in design or function. Will the Medias succeed? And if it does can the rest of the world expect a global release? We sure hope so.
