Samsung Galaxy Mega is 6.3-inches of insane
“You don’t need a tablet, you need THIS!” says some eager marketing executive over at Samsung, hoping to get his foot into the door. “People are sick and tired of tablets, they want phones as big as their faces!” is what another suit most likely said before they wheeled in the Galaxy Mega, a 6.3-inch phablet that’s big on screen size, but small in originality. This is only the news piece about the Mega but come on, Samsung’s having a laugh now, isn’t it?
From 23 August, customers State-side can snap up the Galaxy Mega on contract for US$150 (R1 500) on a two year contract according to IGN. No site yet mentions the price for an unlocked handset, but we’re betting it’s between US$650-800.
Let’s dig into the specs real quick: the Galaxy Mega has a 6.3-inch screen that runs a 1280×720 at 233 PPI (it’s close to HD) resolution, a 1.7Ghz CPU, has an 8-megapixel rear and 1.9 front-facing camera, 8/16GB internal memory and comes in two Samsung-approved colours of black or white. Mega runs Android 4.2.2, has 1.5GB RAM (crazy). It’s an LTE phone as well.
The Galaxy Mega was released back in June for other markets but only made it’s way into the US in August.
This beast is aimed at a niche market. You know, those who want a tablet but want to make calls as a giant piece of glass is pressed against their heads. But our issue is this. For a screen of this magnitude, wouldn’t it be more helpful to have bumped it up to full HD, like the Galaxy S4? We haven’t gotten our hands on the Mega yet, but with a phone of this size it would be hard to imagine a screen as crisp as the S4’s. It’s a giant of a phone and it’s coming real soon for the rest of the world.
