Stir’s Kinetic Desk has WiFi and will learn your standing, sitting habits
Startup company Stir recently announced the launch of its first product, the Stir Kinetic Desk. Supposedly the same team behind Apple’s original iPod, Stir’s standing slash sitting desk can learn your behaviour and then adequately adapt to optimize your health and productivity. It’s also incredibly sleek and stylish.
This height-adjustable desk has only one button sitting in the left-hand corner. A little touchscreen that will let you transition between standing and sitting positions with a simple double tap.
The built-in computer which has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, also comes with health tracking software. This smart desk can literally learn your habits and then adapt to your daily routines. For example, it will show you the amount of calories burned to the amount of time spent standing.
“Harvard Business Review called sitting ‘the smoking of our generation.’ It’s also been shown that switching between sitting and standing can generate an extra fifty minutes of productivity each day.” said JP Labrosse, founder and CEO of Stir.
“Our goal with the Stir Kinetic Desk it to promote a working life infused with movement, leading to better health and improved focus. In short, we want you to move your body and free up your mind while you work. That’s what drives our product and our company,” says Labrosse.
There’s this one feature called “Whisperbreath” which invites the user to gradually move and change his position as the desk rises and falls by an inch. The desk will then “remember” how you react to these tasks and will — over time — develop a profile of you.
If you’d prefer an artistic hand-crafted Italian design to futuristic furniture like the Stir Kinetic Desk, don’t despair. Stir’s got the next best thing — it’s made of hardwood and premium finishes that’s apparently handcrafted and hand-finished in New York. On top of that it has four USB ports and comes in white or espresso, and four other underside colors: kelly green, crimson, ultramarine or charcoal.
The Stir Kinetic Desk will go for a whopping US$3900 and start shipping sometime next year. There are also a bunch of cheaper alternatives out there like the GeekDesk and the Steelcase Airtouch.
