Toshiba hatches 8-inch tablet with Bay Trail CPU, Windows 8.1
At IFA today, Toshiba announced a fresh trio of price-friendly devices including an 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet, a laptop-tablet hybrid and an exceptionally budget touchscreen laptop. The tablet, dubbed Encore, steals its siblings’ limelight for being Toshiba’s first 8-inch Windows tablet.
Encore
The 8-inches of the Toshiba Encore will be fitted with a decent 1280×800 resolution. Using Intel’s new Atom Bay Trail CPU, the tablet will be running Windows 8.1 and is also capable of running full desktop apps like those found on Windows 7 and 8.
Given this, you get a free copy of Office Home & Student 2013 pre-installed on the device. Running these kinds of applications on such a small gadget might seem strange but the Encore comes with a Micro HDMI port so you can plug it into a desktop PC for example or use other peripherals such as keyboards and mouses.
Other hardware specifications include a 32GB hard drive with an expandable microSD storage option. It has a 2MP front-cam that’s apparently specially optimized for Skype calls and an 8MP rear camera. It weighs 479g which is way more than the iPad Mini and the Nexus 7 which are its main competitors.
As Engadget notes, the Toshiba Encore goes on sale sometime in November for US$330 (R3300).
Satellite Click
Seemingly more laptop than tablet, Toshiba also presented the Satellite Click hybrid. This 13.3-inch Windows 8.1 tablet comes with a keyboard dock and trackpad and has respectable specs including 500GB HDD with 4GB RAM. The Toshiba Satellite Click is sported with an AMD A4 processor and is one of AMD’s first laptops being supported by the Temash Chip. It comes with a range of ports like microUSB, micro-HDMI, and microSD.
The Satellite Click is available sometime this month for US$600 (R6000).
Satellite NB15t
This guy is the cheapest of the bunch costing only US$50 (R500) less than the Encore tablet. This 11-inch touch-screen laptop has 500GB of storage and comes with a low-end Intel Celeron CPU and 4GB RAM.
The Satellite NB15t will be available in November for US$380 (R3800).
