Google treats Nexus 7 and 10 with early bird Android 4.4 Kitkat rollout
Nexus just announced that Google’s tasty new mobile OS has started rolling out today on more Nexus devices. Android 4.4 Kitkat was first introduced exclusively with Google’s latest smartphone flagship the Nexus 5 on 31 October but is now becoming available for all Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 Wi-Fi only models.
As Nexus mentioned in its Google+ update below, both the 2012 and 2013 models will have first dibs with the mobile data versions and other Android devices coming “soon”. That’s one of the great things of owning a device developed by Google — not only do new Nexus devices launch with the latest Android OS, older Nexus devices are first to enjoy saucy updates.
Some features you should be expecting include the voice-integrated control. Just say “Ok Google” and you’ll be redirected to Voice search where you can send a text, get directions or play a song without using your hands.
Immersive Mode eliminates the borders and hides onscreen controls for a full-screen experience when an application is opened. This will give you a full-screen experience when reading a book, playing a game or watching a movie.
Moreover, Android 4.4 introduces the new phone and messaging apps that sees Google Hangouts integrated with SMS and MMS. You can also search for “nearby places and businesses, your contacts, or people in your Google Apps domain” directly from the phone app.
The new OS update is most popular for bringing an overall improvement to the UI. It’s meant to be smoother, faster and cleaner than its predecessor Android Jelly Bean. It’s also aimed to be a revolutionary “free for all” mobile OS that’s available to entry-level devices.
Since its launch, Google has said that Android 4.4 Kitkat will be rolling out to all its supported devices around the world “in the coming weeks”. Hopefully, we’ll see Kitkat on all Android smartphones and tablets by the end of this month.
