6 online co-op games we can’t stop playing
It’s never as good going at it alone. Console and PC games practically demand to always be connected, and the games have followed suit. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of online co-op games for console, mobile and PC which we’re having a hard time putting down.
Console
Dead Island: Riptide
I know what you’re thinking. “Another zombie game, really?” Yes, indeed, another zombie game. But this is one of, if not the, best zombie killing games that can be played presently. Dead Island: Riptide combines various strong elements into a truly marvellous package. The narrative is intriguing, the graphics are excellent, the jungle environment mesmerising and overall has addictive and challenging game play. In co-op mode four players can choose one of five characters, each with a unique expertise such as throwing weapons, blades, guns and blunt weapons. Each player also has a unique “Rage” mode that makes it even more exiting. These playing styles merge well into a storm of zombie slaying chaos. This title is assured to entertain both lovers (and haters) of zombies and the co-op genre.
Call of Duty: Ghosts
The Call of Duty franchise needs no introduction. In the past few years it has become one of the most played games of all time, especially when one considers multiplayer and online co-op gaming. Call of Duty: Ghosts is no exception. In the latest instalment there are 7 new multiplayer modes and 20 new kill streaks. It’s also possible to change the landscape of the game by blowing up gas stations or flooding the map, a factor that makes Call of Duty as exciting as ever. I don’t think I need to say any more. Stop wasting time and enter one of the best co-op experiences.
PC
Left 4 Dead 2
In recent times the zombie craze has grown into a massive international obsession, inspiring many books, shows, movies and, most importantly, games. Left 4 Dead 2 was born from this obsession and it remains one of the best co-op online games to date, filled with pure zombie mayhem. In co-op mode you can have a team of up to four players. The original Left for Dead was an excellent game but was bare in terms of depth. Left 4 Dead 2 is an improvement in every aspect. There are more weapons in your arsenal, new maps and enemies and the campaigns are a lot richer in content and atmosphere. If you haven’t indulged in this game, there is no time like the present. A face-off between man and zombie has never been so exciting.
Mass Effect 3
The Mass Effect series is one of the most epic sagas in gaming history. The single player campaigns had in-depth storylines, a massive universe to explore and vivid characters you easily identified with. But it needed Star Trek-style co-op missions. Enter Mass Effect 3. It has an outstanding online co-op survival mode in which you face hordes of aliens. You have a plethora of weapons and classes at your disposal which can be modified in various ways, keeping the game play fresh and exciting. Bioware is also constantly releasing new downloadable content which will keep you hooked for hours as you experiment with different ways of defeating your enemies. Mass Effect 3’s online co-op is not to be missed.
Mobile
Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour
For any fan of the first-person shooter genre, especially the Modern Warfare games, Modern Combat 4 is a brilliant choice for mobile shooter mayhem. In terms of mobile gaming this title really pushes the envelope. The graphics are stunning, the sound design is excellent and the game play is action packed and immersive. There are a variety of multiplayer game modes to enjoy such as “Battle”, “Team Battle” and the ever-enjoyable “Capture the Flag”. There are 6 classes to choose from and much in the spirit of Modern Warfare, you can choose a primary and secondary weapon, both with attachment options, grenades, equipment and perks. Modern Combat 4 is one of the highest acclaimed mobile shooters yet, and its online is console-quality goodness.
Real Racing 3
Real Racing 3 sets the benchmark when it comes to mobile racing games. It has mind-blowing graphics and provides an intense racing experience. You can choose from over 70 different cars from manufacturers such as Porsche, Ferrari, Audi, Bugatti and Mercedes Benz. This title features a prominent technology called TSM (Time Shifted Multiplayer) which allows you to race your friends or random players at any given time, making for one seriously competitive racing experience. Even though I am not a fan of racing games this one kept me entertained for hours.
