Seagate announces enormous 60TB SSD for cat picture hoarders, enterprises

If you think that 2TB SSD in your gaming PC isn’t big enough, don’t worry, Seagate totally agrees.

The company wants you to store even more cat pictures, games and videos of your reactions to those games on its new 60TB SSD. Yeah, that’s 60 000GB.

For now, the SSD is primarily marketed for business use, but it still remains “the largest SSD ever demonstrated”.

The previous largest was Samsung’s enormous 16TB SSD, which was made available in March 2016.

While SSDs can generally occupy smaller spaces thanks to their lack of moving parts, Seagate’s 60TB drive is made compatible with the 3.5-inch form factor — the form factor used by general old school platter HDDs. This also makes the drive easier to integrate into solutions, such as hot-cold servers, Seagate explains.

For now, Seagate’s 60TB SSD is parading at the Flash Storage Summit in demonstration form, but will be available for purchase by companies sometime in 2017.
