Xiaomi-backed Yi Cam 4K+ offers 4K/60fps video [Update]
Update: Yi Technology’s Facebook page said that a South African release is in the pipeline, as the Yi Cam 4K+ is set to be a global release. But it might still take a while for the device to make its way here, a local representative told Gearburn in an emailed statement.
“At the moment, the YI 4K+ is not available on the market yet and we are just planning to develop our sales in the South African market, so stay tuned!”
Original: Xiaomi-backed Yi Technology has gained a cult following thanks to its Yi Cam range, being solid alternatives to GoPro. Now, Yi Technology has one-upped the US firm with its Yi Cam 4K+, being revealed at CES 2017.
The Yi Cam 4K+ is marketed as the first action camera capable of recording at 4K/60fps. In other words, it should make for an extremely smooth viewing experience on paper. Of course, it will also result in massive files — best get a high-capacity memory card then.
But if 4K/60fps doesn’t tickle your fancy, there’s also 4000×3000 at 30fps, 2.7K (2704×1520) at 60fps and 720p/240fps slow-motion.
Otherwise, the camera offers RAW photography, USB Type-C, software-based stabilisation (albeit not for 4K/60fps) and live-streaming capabilities.
The Yi Cam 4K+ offers a hitherto-unseen quality option in the form of 4K/60fps
In terms of the actual camera hardware, you’re looking at the same 12MP Sony IMX377 sensor used in the likes of the Nexus 6P and HTC 10. So, in theory, you can expect solid photos in low light.
In what is fast becoming an expected move from action camera manufacturers, the new camera maintains compatibility with the previous model’s accessories, such as waterproof cases and gimbals.
The camera hasn’t received a price, but expect it to be just above the Yi Cam 4K, which has received a price cut from US$250 to US$200.
There’s been no word on a South African release but, for what it’s worth, Takealot currently stocks the Yi Cam 4K. We have however contacted Yi Technology for clarification on local availability.
