Golf Zero and Llama Llama Spit Spit: this week’s top mobile games

Welcome to Gearburn’s Mobile Game Picks of the Week, a weekly series in which Hadlee takes a look at the latest, most entertaining, or time-consuming mobile games on portable screens.

There are loads of mobile games coming out all the time, so which ones are actually worth downloading?

Humble Best of Strategy Mobile Bundle (paid – Android)

You can always rely on the Humble Bundle website to deliver great value for money. And their latest Android bundle is a must-have for strategy fans.

The Best of Strategy bundle delivers Epic War TD 2, MechCom 1 and 2 and Age of Civilizations as a pay-what-you-want deal. Spend US$3 or more and you get Anomaly Defenders, Anomaly 2, Kingdom Rush Frontiers and Origins and Hero Generations. Spend US$5 or more and you get Worms 4 and Guild of Dungeoneering as well.

In other words, you’re getting a load of bang for your buck.

Ghosts n Goblins (paid – Android, iOS)

Capcom’s classic side-scrolling title is renowned for its difficulty, so it makes you wonder why they ported it to mobile…

Ghosts n Goblins has you leaping over or attacking a variety of enemies, but take a bump and you’ll be forced to run around in your boxer shorts. Otherwise, this version brings touch controls and a casual difficulty mode.

Ghosts n Goblins is available for R14 on Android and R15 on iOS. Check out a playthrough in the video above.

Golf Zero (free – iOS)

Apple’s mobile platform still tends to get some great exclusives, and Golf Zero is the latest title to make its way to the App Store.

The game seems to be a hybrid of Super Meat Boy and Super Stickman Golf, as you endure white-knuckle platforming while golfing. Seriously, there’s a slow-down mechanic for a few seconds as you prepare to take a shot, before the game ups the pace again. And you’ll be using these golf shots for hitting switches, balloons and other level objects too.

Golf Zero is currently free on iOS, so give it a go if you’ve got an iPhone.

Bit City (free – Android, iOS)

The latest game from NimbleBit, the studio behind Tiny Tower, sees players move from crafting and managing a tower to crafting and managing a city.

Bit City sees you running your metropolis, turning profits and using said profits to upgrade the city with better facilities and more vehicles. It brings to mind idle clicker games, as you watch the cash roll in, but you’ve got that charming NimbleBit aesthetic as well.

The biggest downside to Bit City might be its over-reliance on in-app purchases and ads though. Gamers can watch video ads in exchange for fast-forward boosts and the like (a good trade-off), and pay cash for virtual currency and other perks (meh). Now, if only one could make a once-off purchase to unlock everything and do away with ads/virtual currency payments…

Lllama Llama Spit Spit (free – Android)

Spotted by Android Police, Llama Llama Spit Spit is based on a Nickelodeon property, being reminiscent of Shooty Skies, if anything.

In fact, it’s heavily inspired by Shooty Skies, as you control a flying llama and fight minions and bosses. You’ll fire automatically but stop moving and you can charge up a massive attack — just like the other title.

It may be a rip-off then, but Llama Llama Spit Spit is still an entertaining play.
