Your rolling guide to Black Friday tech/gaming deals [Updates]

Xbox One X,black friday

It’s Black Friday week, which means scores of retailers have cranked up their prices and are pretending to give you a deal with a measly 10% discount. Or something.

In any event, we’ll be updating this article as retailers serve up their Black Friday deals, showing you the most important discounts.

Raru

The other big ecommerce website has some solid gaming deals, although the general gaming deals are “only” up to 30% off.

Nevertheless, the company is holding a promotion on Nintendo fare (no Switch stuff though), offering up to 50% off on Wii U, Wii, DS and 3DS titles. In fact, the Wii U titles are all listed at R182, so if you ever wanted Mario Party 10, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker or Splatoon, you know what to do.

Other noteworthy gaming deals include PSVR titles (from R189) and Professional Farmer 2017 (R249).

These deals are changing every hour or so, so it’s goof practice to check back regularly.

Samsung

Samsung’s stores are also offering Black Friday goodness, with its promotion ending on 26 November. So… anything good?

There’s one great deal in the form of a Galaxy S7 Edge for R8999. Samsung claims it was R13 999, but it’s definitely been much cheaper recently — R8999 is still a deal though. Otherwise, there’s 75-inch QLED TV for R50 000 (down from R79 999 apparently), a 65-inch QLED TV for R29 999 (Samsung says it was R49 999) and a 49-inch 4K TV for R7999 (apparent savings of R3000).

Mobile games

Looking for some cut-price mobile games? Well, Android gamers have a dedicated hub (as spotted on r/Android). Prominent discounts include Mini Metro (from R79 to R8), Monument Valley (from R56 to R19) and Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition (from R67 to R15).

Looking for iOS deals? Then hop on over to AppShopper, with notable discounts on Monument Valley 2, Galaxy of Pen and Paper and Mini Metro.

Loot

Another prominent ecommerce website has hopped on the bandwagon this year, in the form of Loot.

The website’s promotion lasts until 27 November, with noteworthy deals on the likes of a Samsung 55-inch QLED TV for R9999 (down from R15 999) and Doom on X1/PS4 for R290.

Hirsch’s

The electronics and appliance veteran is getting on the Black Friday bandwagon in a big way. So if you were looking for a cut-price TV, this might be the venue for you.

Some of the bigger discounts include a 65-inch LG OLED TV for R47 999 (down from R67 999), a 55-inch Hisense UHD TV for R6999 (down from R9999) and a 65-inch Samsung QLED TV for R29 999 (down from R56 699).

Buy a Nokia 8, get a Nokia 5 too

Vodacom is set to run a Black Friday special for those wanting to get their hands on a Nokia 8.

“Purchase or upgrade to the Nokia 8 smartphone and get the Nokia 5 smartphone free. Plus 20GB data once off at selected Vodashops and Vodacom online store whiles stock last,” read an excerpt of a press release.

Go to Vodaworld and the deal is a little sweeter though.

“Purchase or upgrade to the Nokia 8 smartphone and get the Nokia 5 smartphone and Nokia 3310 free. Plus 20GB data once off at Vodaworld whiles stock last,” the release reads. The offer is only valid on Friday.

Steam

The latest outlet to join in on the week’s promotional activities is Steam, as the PC gaming storefront launches its Autumn Sale.

Available from 22-28 November, you should expect hefty discounts on franchises like Fallout, Resident Evil and Sniper Elite. We also see steep discounts on games like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (R75) and Just Cause 3 (R63).

PlayStation hardware and software

Last week saw Ster-Kinekor Entertainment announce their Black Friday deals, with most actually valid from 17-26 November.

The PlayStation distributor is offering R1000 off PSVR bundles, while also throwing in Gran Turismo Sport or Skyrim VR. Want a console? The distributor is also offering a PS4 PS Hits bundle for R3999. You can also get a 1TB GT Sport or CoD: WW2 Limited Edition bundle for R4999 (valid from 24-26 November).

There are also quite a few games on special, including GT Sport (R499), Horizon Zero Dawn (R499) and The Last of Us Remastered (R299).

PlayStation Store

The Japanese colossus has seen it fit to discount various games on the PlayStation Store, ranging from PS4 and VR titles to PS3 and Vita fare.

Some of the more prominent PS4 deals include NFS Payback for R599, GTA V for R359 and Assassin’s Creed Origins for R699. Want to dust off the PSVR? Then you’ve got GT Sport for R450, Batman: Arkham VR for R191 and Star Trek: Bridge Crew for R349.50.

Got a PS3? Then you’ve got some goodness as well, with FIFA 18 for R599, The Last of Us: GOTY Edition for R141, Persona 5 for R390 and the Mass Effect Trilogy for R137.

Xbox Store sale

Got an Xbox One and looking to save on games? Microsoft has already announced its discounts, with some games slashed by up to 75%/85% (Gold members save more).

Some of the more prominent deals include Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (75%/85%), Sleeping Dogs (75%/85%), Just Cause 3 (70%/80%), Mirror’s Edge Catalyst (67%/75%), the Bioshock Collection (60%/67%) and Mass Effect: Andromeda (50%/60%).

Incredible Connection

The popular gadget retailer has already kicked off its promotion, offering “A Deal A Day” until Thursday, before kicking off its Black Friday sale.

Its first “deal” is an Xbox 360 4GB with Minecraft for R1999 (you save a whole R100). But the company is granting an additional 30% discount if you use Visa checkout.

Makro

The chain store has issued its Black Friday catalogue (PDF), so what can you expect?

There’s a PS4 500GB console with DriveClub, Horizon Zero Dawn and Ratchet and Clank for R3999 (valid from 24-26 November). I’m assuming this is the aforementioned PS Hits bundle. Otherwise, all the other above-mentioned PS deals are included here.

There’s also an Xbox One S with FIFA 17 for R3499, a VivoFit 3 fitness tracker for R1299 and an HP 15-series laptop (Core i7 7500U, 8GB RAM and AMD R7 M440 graphics) for R9999.

Dion Wired

Everyone’s favourite brick and mortar alternative to Incredible Connection also has a few noteworthy deals available in its catalogue.

The company is selling a 500GB Xbox One S for R3499 as well, but adds a second controller instead. Spend R1000 extra and you can get the 1TB Xbox One S and second controller — I’d save the cash and get the 500GB console, then buy a 1TB or 2TB portable drive. You can also tack on R599 to get The Witcher 3 and Just Cause 3.

Other noteworthy specials include JBL Bluetooth headphones for R499, JBL portable Bluetooth speakers for R999 and a Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro for R2299.
