GPD Win 2 portable gaming device smashes Indiegogo target

Last month, we reported on the specs and claimed benchmarks of the GPD Win 2, the successor to the original Windows-based portable gaming device.

Featuring an Intel Core M3 chip, Intel HD Graphics 615, six to eight hours of juice and 8GB of RAM, it certainly makes for a big upgrade over the Atom-equipped original.

The laptop/DS-style device hit crowdfunding website Indiegogo on 15 January and, surprise surprise, it’s blown past its US$100 000 goal. In fact, the device has already hit the US$1.4-million mark with two months to go.

You’ll also want to back the device if you fancy getting it for US$649 as the price will increase to US$899 thereafter.

In case you missed our initial report, the team behind the GPD Win 2 is claiming some solid figures for gaming. The company says you can expect GTA 5 to run at just under 40fps at max settings, Overwatch to hit 50-70 fps on low visual settings and 70fps for Dota 2.

We’ve also seen a plethora of YouTube videos, showing various titles running on the device. Most recently, we’ve seen Resident Evil 7 (albeit at sub-HD resolution), Ikaruga, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of Mordor.

Otherwise, the company is also pushing the device as a machine for PS4 and Xbox One game streaming and as an emulation station.

Nevertheless, the Nintendo Switch doesn’t look like it will be unseated by the upstart brand, owing to a cheaper price and exclusive library. But you’ve got to give credit to the GPD team for its unique proposition.
