Samsung has today announced its latest flagship smartphone chipset, the Exynos 9820.
For one, the chip is based on the 8nm process, a slight shrink from the 9810’s 10mm process.
It also features a tri-CPU cluster design, with two custom cores, two ARM Cortex-A75 cores, and four Cortex-A55 cores for low power usage.
It’s notable that Samsung has decided to forgo using the ARM Cortex-A76 cores that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro’s HiSilicon Kirin 980 employs.
Nevertheless, the Samsung chip also features an NPU. Samsung hasn’t really provided many details about this chip, but it does suggest the NPU will help the 9820 perform “AI tasks around seven times faster than the predecessor”.
The chip also features a new modem — allowing for Cat 20 LTE speeds (around 2Gbps), and video recording performance from 4K at 150fps, to 8K at 30fps. These videos can also be rendered with 10-bit colours.
“The Exynos 9 Series 9820 is expected to be in mass production by the end of this year,” Samsung adds, which puts it in line to be included in the Samsung Galaxy S10.
