Samsung phones could sport ‘graphene’ batteries by 2021
Samsung is working on graphene batteries for its 2021 smartphones, according to leaker and Venturebeat contributor Evan Blass.
Blass on Monday tweeted that Samsung will have “at least one” smartphone with a graphene battery by 2020 or 2021, he “was told”.
Blass’ track record for leaks are rather impressive, so it’s information that should excite Samsung fans.
The batteries will be “capable of a full charge in under an hour,” he adds. But the primary issue is price at present.
That said, the company has been working on graphene batteries at least since 2015. But its doesn’t have a great history when it comes to placing batteries into smartphones.
In 2016, the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco left the phone banned from flights worldwide. Samsung eventually issued a phone-killing software update later that year.
Current batteries use lithium ion, which is incredibly flammable and is slowly facing more limitations as smartphones grow more power-hungry.
While Samsung nonetheless is planning a 6000mAh battery for a budget smartphone this year, graphene could be the answer to those problems come 2021.
