Samsung Access turns the smartphone into a subscription service

Samsung announced a new smartphone-as-a-service subscription plan as an alternative way to get its devices into users’ hands.

Dubbed Samsung Access, the month-to-month service allows users to pick up an S20 smartphone, Samsung Premium Care, a Microsoft 365 subscription, and 1TB of storage on OneDrive from $37 per month.

That price is for the base model S20, but users can choose the storage capacity and colour of their fancy without an increased premium. The S20 Plus plan will cost $42 per month, while the Ultra will cost $5 more.

Considering these phones cost in excess of $999, with a 365 subscription adding another $100 onto that, it’s not a terrible deal.

While Samsung will let you cancel at any time, if you do so within three months, you’ll be forced to pay an additional $100 exit fee.

Users can also upgrade and downgrade as they feel fit, provided the phone they return is in good condition.

Samsung Access suggests that the company no longer wants to sell their devices, but an experience as well. It’s a pretty smart move especially considering flagship desvices’ huge price tags in 2020.

The subscription service is not available in South Africa, but it would be an enticing addition to the country’s mobile retail landscape should it be introduced, especially for those who don’t wish to be pegged to a specific network.
