Vodacom has launched the Alcatel 2019G — a phone for elderly people and people with impairments.

The phone comes with a dedicated charging dock, SOS emergency functionality, and a torch. In order to help those with low vision and dexterity impairments, the Alcatel 2019G has a large keypad and a simple user interface with large icons.

It also has a 2MP rear camera, while its battery provides 16 hours of usage according to Vodacom.

The SOS emergency function is provided via the Vodacom 112 Emergency Service App. The app allows users to contact the ER24 Emergency Contact Centre to request police, fire, or ambulance assistance.

Vodacom also provides a variety of services for customers requiring accessibility options. Those with specific accessibility needs are able to register on the Vodacom ICT Accessibility website.

This includes providing assistance to visually impaired people to activate VoiceOver and TalkBack on smartphones.

Meanwhile, people with hearing impairments can sign up for specialised bundles that have more SMSes and no voice calls.

Customers can buy the Alcatel 2019G for R649 cash or sign up for a Specific Needs package including the phone as part of a Vodacom contract.
