Sony unveils redesigned PlayStation app for PS4 and PS5 users

new playstation ps app

Sony has unveiled a refreshed and redesigned look for the PlayStation mobile companion app, the PS App.

Hideaki Nishino, Senior VP of Platform Planning & Management for PlayStation made the announcement via the PlayStation Blog. It comes just days from Sony’s launch of their next-generation console, the PlayStation 5 (PS5).

This redesigned app is aimed at enhancing the PlayStation experience on both the PS4 and PS5 consoles.

However, some of the biggest changes apply to the company’s next-gen console. The new app allows players to connect online with their friends and launch their favourite PlayStation titles even when they’re not close to their console.

Older versions of the app previously restricted players from launching a PS title remotely. However, the new app will let you do this if you have the PS5.

You will also be able to make PS Store purchases and remotely download games to your PS4 or PS5.

New PlayStation App features for PS5

With the updated app, players can now sign-in to their PS5 console and remotely download and launch games. Meanwhile, you can also manage your PS5 storage to make space for updates and newly purchased titles.

The PS App also benefits from key features such as a refreshed user interface (UI) that allows players to interact with their Home screen. This includes checking which friends are online, accessing information on your recently played titles, and viewing your Trophy List.

The Explore tab allows users to easily navigate the latest news from Sony and game developers to keep you up-to-date on content from the official PlayStation Blog.

Sony will also integrate messaging features into the app so that players can connect with their friends online. This will migrate existing messages and threads from the standalone messaging app directly to the PS App for seamless interactions.

Party and voice chats will also feature on the app as players can create party chats and start voice chats with up to 15 friends through a mobile device.

The PS App does require an existing PlayStation Now account. If you don’t have one, you can register for a PS Now account via the My PlayStation website.

The redesigned PS App is available globally through updates for both iOS and Android devices.

If you don’t have the app, it can be downloaded via the App Store and Google Play Store.
