Honor recently introduced the Honor 200 series which appears to fit in well with other brands when it comes to style, appeal, and overall street cred.  We were very keen to find out if this contender would deliver not only appetizing content but also if the Honor 200 Pro 5G could be a competent content creation machine.

The Honor 200 Pro 5G is said to be a photography enthusiast smartphone as it brings in an interestingly competent camera alongside some smart AI camera themes all thanks to a partnership that Honor has sparked with Parisian portrait photography house Studio Harcourt.

Honor also confirmed that GQ Magazine South Africa would be keen to snap and use the Honor 200 Pro 5G for its incoming cover shot.

So we know the phone has delivered buzz in these streets but what does it bring to a competitive market?

Design

The Honor 200 Pro boasts a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen, 0.8 inches larger than the Honor 200, with a resolution of 1224 x 2700 pixels and a display that delivers vibrant colors and an immersive viewing experience.

With 4000 nits of peak brightness, 120 Hz refresh rate, and a wet touch enhancement feature meaning you could get away with trying to scroll while your hands have lotion on them.

When Honor introduced the Honor 200 Pro 5G to us, their story was that the rear panel was inspired by the ocean and came with elegant coastal aesthetics, which are meant to introduce a refreshing back panel to consumers.  Our Honor 200 Pro came in the colour Ocean Cyan, which looks a little earthy. This is not a bad thing.

We do see curved bezels and an almost plastic polished metal edge that surrounds the Honor 200’s curved edges.

The Honor 200 Pro does fit in my hand pretty comfortably considering it only weighs about 199g and is only 8.2mm thin.

Camera

Honor positions the 200 Pro as a device for content creators, photographers, and videographers.

The camera hub at the back includes a 50MP main camera, a 50MP telephoto camera, a 12MP ultra-wide and macro camera, and a 50MP portrait selfie camera with an f/2.1 aperture speed.

The camera hub is inspired by the form of Gaudi’s “Casa Mila”, which explains the oval-looking shape.

You will pickup various Harcout portrait themes thanks to Honor’s partnership with Harcourt Studios. These do come in handy to bring forward competitive imagery.

Under the hood and processor

There’s an agile Snapdragon 8, Generation 3 AI chipset, coupled with Magic 8 OS and about 12GB on the 512 version of space to play with.

Battery

There’s a 5200 mAh silicon carbon battery, which comes with 100W supercharging and 66W wireless charging. This all translates to the Honor 200 Pro 5G charging to 50% in just 15 minutes and a charge to 64% in just 30 minutes.

AI ready features

The Honor 200 Pro houses a beefier processor, ensuring smoother multitasking and app performance but what makes this one device really interesting are the array of AI features that come with the Honor 200 Pro 5G.

Its Magic Capsule feature provides quick access to video or music, AI gesture control allows contactless gesture control of the device.  AI magic portal allows simplified searches and turns the smartphone into a convenient device. Three fingers swiped down allows the user to save whatever is displayed at the time be it an image or a webpage.

Overall verdict

The Honor 200 Pro 5G comes ready to please at a competitive price point.

It’s filled with some features to make life a little easier while delivering some interestingly convincing images.

The device came with a convincing dual speaker system which we appreciated but it was the list of AI features that won us over.

It’s what you can do with a device that makes it interesting.  The world is changing and device makers understand that they are now selling convenience and what a device can do as opposed to once upon a time when device makers would lead with specifications only as a selling point.

It’s a convincing smartphone that does deliver. We took it to work with us and it delivered something surprising, content, and a sunset that will always remind us how an Honor 200 Pro had our back.
