Confirmed: OnePlus 5 to use Snapdragon 835 (surprise!)
The Snapdragon 835 is one of the most powerful smartphone chips around right now, going toe to toe with Apple’s processors and Samsung’s silicon. Of course, we’re expecting all the major flagships in the second half of the year (or at the end of the first half) to use Qualcomm’s new chip, including the OnePlus 5.
Now, OnePlus has confirmed the speculation and leaks, saying that the upcoming handset would indeed be packing heat.
“We’re proud to announce the OnePlus 5 will feature the Snapdragon™ 835 processor, which sets the foundation for smooth, powerful, and efficient performance,” a OnePlus representative posted on the official forum. Expect the brand to draw out these key detail reveals over the next few weeks, leading up to the overall reveal.
What else should you expect from the new phone though? For starters, the company has also said that touch latency is a focus for the new phone.
The OnePlus 5 will indeed be packing a Snapdragon 835 chip, but other specs are just rumoured for now
“Our engineers tested why scrolling occasionally differed between phones. There wasn’t a lot of precedent for them to work with — no benchmarks, no industry case studies to learn from,” the representative explained. “So we used a special high-speed camera to track screen movements and measure input speeds. As a result, apps respond quickly to your touch for a seamless user experience.”
The company is also aiming to “improve smoothness” via software tweaks.
“The apps you use most are ready to go when you turn on the OnePlus 5. Apps you rarely use are deprioritised and kept from affecting performance.”
It’s unclear when the new phone is actually launching, but we do know that South African retailer Takealot will be releasing the device in July.
