Galaxy S9 now official, packing Sony-style slow-mo and more

Samsung’s Galaxy S9 has officially been unveiled, coming in Galaxy S9 and S9+ flavours. And all the recent leaks were true, from super slow-mo at 960fps (the same as Sony’s flagships) to the design.

Starting with the camera, we see the 960fps slow-mo come into effect, equalling Sony’s 720p resolution as well. The slow-mo option records 0.2 seconds of slow-mo, equal to six seconds of playback — slightly more than Sony’s just over 0.1 seconds of recording.

In other words, those hoping for more traditional slow-motion capture experience (i.e. choosing which bit to turn into slow-mo) might be disappointed again. But Samsung will however let users choose a Motion Detection mode, which automatically films in slow-mo when motion is detected within a box in the viewfinder.

The Galaxy S9 features few surprises, but those intrigued by Sony’s slow-mo will want to check this out

The main 12MP camera (the S9 packs one camera but the plus model has two) is capable of switching between two apertures, namely a wide f/1.5 for low-light shots and a narrower f/2.4 aperture for daytime snaps.

We also see two Apple-inspired features in the form of hybrid face/iris unlocking and AR-powered emojis. The latter is essentially inspired by Bitmoji, letting you take a selfie of yourself which will be used as a basis for emojis.

Otherwise, we’ve got that familiar IP68 design (complete with more convenient but still poorly placed fingerprint scanner), Exynos 8910 or Snapdragon 845 chipset, 4GB of RAM (6GB for S9+), 3000mAh or 3500mAh battery and 8MP f/1.7 selfie shooter.
