Apple to name new device iPad HD? We weigh in
Will the next iPad be named the iPad HD? The floodgates have opened and rumours are spewing out at a rate of knots, both confirming and denying the possibly that the device will be called the iPad HD.
It began in July when this website said that a “double-resolution” iPad would launch in Fall (autumn). It seems that the site was correct on everything bar the timing, as the new iPad launches this Wednesday.
The case for the iPad HD
Hell, the feature everyone wants is Retina Display for the iPad so the HD moniker would be more than fitting. If the next iPad has a resolution of 2048×1536, it’ll feature the sharpest tablet display yet.
People go mental when “HD” is plonked next to the name of a device. Toothbrush HD, Sandwich HD, it just sounds better. Apple can make the iPad exceptionally relatable by combing two terms which all but define the tech culture of today.
And hey, it pays to have a lower end tablet when the iPad HD rolls into town. Apple needs to keep its punters happy, point in case when the iPhone 4S launched, the iPhone 3GS became a “free” phone.
The case against the iPad HD
It won’t even be HD for God’s sake. If the iPad HD ships with the 2048×1536, that’s already a marked improvement over the 1920×1080 standard. Why call it an HD iPad if it’s beyond HD? Plus, Apple doesn’t even use the term “HD” to describe its screen. Apple’s term is Retina display.
HD is overused and to put it colloquially, it’s a dickhead term. Simply slapping “HD” onto the end of a product doesn’t make it better. Can Apple gamble its good name away by associating itself with this heavily clichéd word?
Most of all, calling it the iPad HD takes away from the other unannounced features of the new iPad. We’d say confidently that Apple won’t be calling its new device the iPad HD. The current naming convention of numbering its devices seems more in line with Apples usual processes. Tune in tomorrow and find out exactly what Apple will be calling it.
