Yearly releases of GTA ‘doesn’t make sense’ says Take-Two
Ever wondered why we don’t see an annual release of Grand Theft Auto in the vein of, say, Call of Duty? Take-Two’s “chief operating officer” Karl Slatoff believes it would “fatigue” the experience, as reported by Gamespot.
Speaking at the Wedbush Transformational Technologies Conference, Slatoff said: “Often times people ask us ‘Why don’t you come out with Grand Theft Auto every two years?’ To us, that doesn’t make sense, because Grand Theft Auto, every single time it comes out, is a brand new experience. You can’t possibly do that in two years. And if we did that, our product would fatigue and the franchise would degrade from a value perspective.”
Slatoff’s stance echoes that of Rockstar’s Leslie Benzies who, last November, said that while Rockstar has the resources to make a new GTA game every year, it fears fans “would lose interest.”
According to Benzies: “We could easily… [churn] out a new version year after year without really progressing as a franchise, but if we did that, eventually the fans would lose interest. We want every one of our games to meet and exceed the players’ expectations so they always want more, and as such GTAV feels like our most ambitious project yet.”
Indeed, anticipation for Grand Theft Auto V is reaching fever-pitch as the game’s 13 September release date steadily draws nearer. It’s likely to be one of the last “big” games release for the ageing PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360; the former of which is set to make for way its predecessor at the tail end of the year.
Grand Theft Auto V is reportedly the biggest and most ambitious entry in the series yet, as we’ve written about multiple times.
