UbiSlate 7Ci could be cheapest Android tablet yet

The UbiSlate 7Ci comes from the UK, is made by Datawind, and sells for £30, sorry that’s actually £40 if you add a delivery charge, said CNET. It’s also a re-skinned, commercial model of India’s insanely popular Aakash 2.

While it is a 7″ tablet, it’s no Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD. Take a gander at the extremely humble specifications: A 800×600 display, 512MB RAM, 4GB storage, WiFi, a Cortex A8 1GHz CPU and Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

For those keen on a UbiSlate with a little more power, there’s the 7C+ for £70, and it comes with a slot for a SIM card, as well as HD video “support” — in other words it will run HD video, but it’s not going to look that impressive on a 800×480 screen. For Datawind, it’s all about getting their products in the hands of customers and “delivering the internet” says Datawind founder Suneet Singh Tuli. But for £30, who’s complaining? One of the major wrinkles for most will be the lack of the Google Play store, as the 7Ci uses the GetJarapp store, a service that is insanely popular and boasts over 15 million users who’ve downloaded well over 1.05-billion apps.

Datawind, who makes India’s Aakash 2 tablet as well as hundreds of other low-cost, “aspirational” products, will only be selling the 7Ci in the UK for now, but good luck getting your hands on one. The site states that “due to overwhelming demand, pre-Christmas stock is sold out. Orders placed now will be received after Xmas”. For that price, and with those specs, the 7Ci just became the perfect stocking-filler for any tech junkie, provided they’ve picked up their tablets before Christmas.
